Florida Sunset

In mid December, my husband and I flew to South Florida to visit his family, and amid the family time, I was able to see the water twice. These images were taken in the vicinity of Naples, during a beautiful sunset. My second trip to the beach was for power walking, so my camera stayed home. 

To be honest, these photos need to be reprocessed because the colors aren't up to my standards, but this season has been anything but slow at the lab, so my own work ends up getting repeatedly postponed. I still have a countless rolls that need rescans, or images that were scanned but never processed. And staying late to work on my own photos after staring at someone else's for hours is about the least appealing way to spend my free time, especially when there are walks to take, meals to make and books to read.

Provence, Part 1

Some images from a week in Provence at the beginning of last month. We did what one should do when in Provence: explored small towns and villages, ate our weight in juicy tomatoes and olives, drank local wine, admired olive groves and vineyards and sat in the sun. It was a full week, and I realized how much I had missed that region and can't wait to go back. More photos to come.

⎨Florida, in a nutshell⎬

Florida was family time, sunshine, beautiful light & a magnificent sunset, older homes, butterflies, more family time and yellow everywhere. For the first time in three years, I can't wait to go back. I've never not missed the family I've become a part of, but these days, I really wish we or they lived closer. And I really miss the little girl in these photos.

Up in the Air

 

I love flying. There's nothing like packing a carry-on, stopping at a newsagent to get a magazine, and sitting down at the gate, with said magazine and a cup of coffee, amidst strangers. I always wonder if our final destination is the same, if they were on a business trip, or visited friends on the other side of the country, or if they traveled on their own. 

As much as I love being with Brent, traveling on my back to and from Florida this Christmas was exciting. Sometimes, I wish I'd had him to talk to, but I could just walk around the terminal, looking for sushi, leafing through magazines, and reading a novel. I usually pick up at least one magazine (it used to be newsmagazines, and then fashion, but now it's food magazines), stop somewhere for sushi, buy a giant cup of coffee or herbal tea if I fear dehydration. I read more than in any other place, and try to stay away from my phone or laptop. I only take out my camera on the plane. 

 

And when we take off, I stare out the window for a long time. I try not to fall asleep until all I can see are clouds and I know it's safe to sleep. On the way back from Miami, I used up 1/3 of a roll to take these photos, and I was happy that I'd underexposed the roll and pushed it during processing. I couldn't have gotten those results if I hadn't. Even the last shot, of the tips of the Golden Gate bridge towers I'm very happy with: it's mysterious, it's got character, it's different.
